Patient of the Month

Suffield Veterinary Hospital again sponsored a “Why My Pet Is Special” essay contest for students at McAlister Intermediate School. Below, we are proud to present the winning essay from Kate Berry (in Mrs. Bennett & Mrs. Fortin’s class) about her dog Sugar, followed by our Runner-Up and Honorable Mentions. This adorable photo of Kate and Sugar (aka Pig) was taken by our great Vet Tech Jen Haire.

The Adventures of Sugar, the Dog we call Pig

Sugar is a pit bull mix who was rescued from Dakin Animal Shelter in Springfield, Massachusetts.  Sugar has many names.  Some of her names are Pig and Mama.  She gets her pig name because she looks like a pig, makes piggy noises and has some pink skin and when she lays down her ears look like pig ears.  Peg is 7 years old and an adventurous dog.
Pig has broken her leg by trying to jump with me and my cousin Adam on the trampoline.  She wanted to try to do front flips with us so she put her foot on the trampoline then she fell right off.  I think she tried to attempt to do a flip off the trampoline, but because she fell really weird she broke her leg.  After she went to the vet, Pig had gotten a purple cast and then she got a red one for Christmas and that year she went to see Santa Claus and we put a Christmas sock on her cast.
Since Pig’s tough break she has made some friends with the goat next door and the UPS guy.  Our neighbor came over with the goat Milky Way, then Pig wanted to say hi but Milky Way did not want to say hi to her, so Pig chased Milky Way all the way around the house until she ran out of breath.  Then, one time when the UPS man came to the house, Pig jumped right into his truck.  I think she wanted to go cruisin’ with the UPS guy.
Lastly, Pig loves to snuggle around, near and on me.  There is no safe place to sit when Pig is around.  She lays right next to me, then gets a little closer by putting her legs on me and then her head and the next thing I know she is laying on my chest.  All 55 pounds of Pig on top of me.  Pig is a wonderful dog who is loved by me and everyone she meets. (Except for Milky Way the goat).

The Time We Got My Dog Elliott

One day my family decided to get a dog so we went to New York to get my dog.  It was a long drive it felt like a whole day.  We got there in the afternoon.  I jumped out of the car and we walked to go meet the people in the parking who had our new dog Elliott at Petco.  I was so happy to see my new dog.  He was sooo cute and he was just a puppy.  Elliott is a mix, he’s part Golden Retriever and something else.  We named him Elliott because it seemed like the perfect name.

Then we went into Petco to get a dog bed, dog food, dog bowls and dog toys.  The bed was fluffy and his bowls were colorful.  After we paid we got in the car.  My dog sat in the front with me and my sister Olivia.  It was so much fun but my dog threw up under my feet because he got car sick from sitting in the front.  My dad grabbed the paper towels and cleaned it up.  Then when we got home Elliot hid under the dining room table, our neighbor Mrs. Low helped us get Elliott out from under the table because she is a dog expert.  Finally Elliott got used to us and now is not afraid of us but he’s still gets excited when new people come to the house.  Every day I think what would we do without Elliott.  I am so happy that we got him.

A Special Dog

Hi!  My name is Natalie.  I have a dog named Eli and he is a black Labrador retriever.  He is 13 years old.  His birthday is November 15th.  Eli is a male dog.  When I open the pantry door Eli runs over to me, thinking he will get food.  Eli is the first dog I ever had in my life.  He likes to play tug-of-war.  He is my favorite dog ever!
Here are some reasons why Eli is so smart.  Eli is very smart because he knows when it is breakfast or dinner time.  He also knows when there’s another dog around without seeing it.
This is why Eli is so lazy. Eli could sleep all day long.  And if he is sleeping when I get home, he does not wake up.  He is tired all the time, if he is really tired, he will just collapse on the floor and fall asleep.  This is why he is so funny.
Why is he so cuddly?  Eli is super cuddly because he lets me lay my head on him and use him as a pillow.  He also likes to sit in my lap.  I think it is funny because he is a big dog.  That is why I love my dog.
Here are some fun facts about dogs:
1. Dogs are one of the most popular pets.
2. Labs are one of the longest living dogs.
3. Dogs only eat a meal twice a day.

How I got my dog

My name is Dominic, I am 9 years old, I have 1 pet dog named Indi, she is from Indiana.  We adopted her when she was only 3 in human years.  Indi is a mix of dogs and a yellowish tan color.  I think Indi is a cute dog because my two year old sister pets Indi in the back softly a lot.  And runs around the lawn chasing mice, rabbits, and one time at night there was a skink and chased it in the backyard but then she got sprayed, we had to wash her off in tomato juice in the bath.

Indi likes to try to run out of the house even with a electric collar. I don’t mind looking then chasing her on my scooter or bike.  My dog is special because we adopted her from Indiana when I was only 1 and Indi’s full name is Indiana and she is from Indiana.  She broke her leg and limps on her front left leg.  I do not remember how because I was too little to remember and I feel very bad that she broke her leg and has been limping like she is 95 since she was just a puppy.
Indi is funny because she is afraid of a silent microwave that I can not even hear.  And if anything is walking on the sidewalk Indi will start barking even in the middle of the night when I am sleeping.  Indi will eat anything since I have 2 sloppy brothers and 1 sloppy sister in my family.  She is like a human vacuum and keeps the floor spotless all day.  I also like giving my dog more food and refilling her water 247 at breakfast, lunch and dinner.
We have tried everything to get Indi to play with a toy we have tried toy mice, fake bones, balls and so many other dog toys, but all she seems to like is mice, real mice.  Indi tries to be nice and play with the mice but always ends up killing the mice and all she’s trying to do is make a friend but she accidentally kills the mice.  I love Indi.
I hope you agree my dog is very to me special.

My Pet

Hi my name is Addison and I have a hamster named Lucky.  The first time I saw her she was in Petco, I knew she was the one for me.  In my opinion Lucky is so cute I am going to teach you about my Chinese dwarf hamster she so cute because she is cuddly, very small and furry.
Lucky is very playful.  By running really fast on her wheel and climbs on her cage to the top and climbs down very fast AND she runs in her ball.  She is very energetic.
TIPS.  If your hamster is not playing and is hiding that might mean the hamster is sick you should go to the vet.  If the hamster is not drinking you should put honey on the tip of the water bottle and make sure the water bottle works.  Hamsters are nocturnal and Chinese dwarf hamsters are not as known as getting a sickness called wet tail.
I hope that you enjoyed reading about my Chinese dwarf hamster named Lucky!

My Favorite Dog Brownie

Hi my name is Daniel.  I am going to tell you about my dog Brownie.  Brownie is cute with his marble eyes. Brownie is very protective of me.  Brownie is fun to play with outside.
My dog Brownie is a 10 year old dachshund and he looks like a hotdog.  Brownie is a very cute dog.  Brownie is very cute with his marble eyes.  When Brownie sits in my lap he is very cute.  I bet when Brownie was a baby he would look very cute.
When Brownie hears our door bell ring he barks.  When Brownie hears noises outside he barks and scares them away.  When Brownie sees a car that I do not recognize Brownie barks at it.
Brownie is fun to play with outside.  In the house I Play with Brownie with his dog toys.  Brownie is fun to take walks with.

My Dog Lucky

Hi, My name is Hazel.  I will tell you about my pet dog Lucky.  There are four reasons that I love my special dog.  First reason: Generous and comforts, when I get sad Lucky comes and at least tries to make me happy or cheer me up.  She likes to lick me and when it’s too much I laugh and go play fetch!  There’s more!  Lucky is generous with her love.  She is always ready to put her head in your lap and make you feel better.  There’s STILL more: Lucky loves to lick.  That’s why  sometimes I call her Licky.  Lucky will lick you if you call her over because  you wanted to pet her.  She would just lick, lick, lick.  It’s like she’s giving you a nick hug!  But in licks!
Reason two: Smart.  Sometimes I play with a ball in my garage.  I shut the door but there is another way to get in, so when I think she’s gone she runs around the other way and grabs the ball in her mouth, then I have to chase her around until she drops the ball or gets tired.  She is super smart when it comes to that!   Here is another!  When Lucky smells food she knows.  She will sniff all around me until she finds the food!  If it’s on the table then…she will stand on her two back legs, use her two front legs to put on the table and uses her tongue to lick the food!  She has a smart sniffer!  Lucky is also smart because she will wait for her food when I say stay.  Then she goes along right to her food bowl and eats up, then walks away and goes on to her normal life again!
Reason three: Funny.  When Lucky smells peanut butter in her food bowl or anywhere Lucky will lick till there is nothing left. She’s like a human dishwasher!  Lucky’s licks are so funny!  Another way Lucky is funny is when I pick up her back legs it’s like I’m dancing with her.  It’s super hilarious!  Then when I talk to her like when I say “Come girl” she turns her head like, what are you talking about.  She does know the word treat so when I say “treat girl” she zooms in and I give her a treat!
Reason four: Cute.  In the winter Lucky loves to sit by the fireplace.  She will sit there for at least thirty minutes.  The fireplace was like her TV!  Lucky looks especially cute lying down her brown shiny eyes just get me in that way.  She is so adorable!  Here is one more!  Lucky is cute when it comes to learning when I say her name her soft ears perk up exactly like a fuzzy bunny.
My dog Lucky is one of my bets companies.  I hope you agree that my dog Lucky is a very special pet.

Why My Dog Piper Is Special

Why Piper is special is that there is no other dog as smart as her.  She is so smart that I taught her how to roll over in less than twenty minutes.  Also she can jump so high that on our vacation to Maine in the summertime, she jumped onto a four foot sea wall running away from a big dog.  But then, she came down and started playing with him.  And at least once a day she almost has to do something our family calls her “puppy sprints”.  That means she runs around the house at full speed and barks like crazy.  Also she only has to take one more training class and then she can start training class and then she can start training to be a therapy dog.  That means she helps people in hospital and in other places feel better.  I love Piper so much.  She means a lot to me, and I hope that I mean a lot to Piper.

A Wonderful German Shepherd named Yanky

Have you ever wondered what it would be like having a wonder German shepherd like mine?  It’s most likely you’ll know it because I’m going to explain how special he is.
Protective.  Yanky makes sure my family is safe.  If anybody is knocking on my door, whether it is a stranger or not, Yanky always lets us (my family) know.  Yanky will always protect us.  Even tho Yanky is really not vicious, he will still protect us.
Cuddly.  You know, when I’m sad, Yanky (my only brother because I have 2 sisters) comes over to me and gives me a “Hey, Cheer up!” look.  And then, soon enough, I start to smile.  And get close to him and fall asleep.  Yankee is also very soft (even tho he sheds fur a lot.)  Yanky is probably the “cuddliest” dog on the planet.
Strong.  Yanky is VERY strong.  Once I tried playing tug-of-war with one of his toys.  At first, Yanky wasn’t getting in as much power as before.  Then all of a sudden, Yanky struck me with a strong look, then pulled the toy right out of my hands!  Yanky is very strong.
Smart.  Yanky always knows what is coming.  He never stops thinking about anything.  He sometimes gets sidetracked, like the time he saw a red fox then chased it.  Even tho, he is smart.
I hope you enjoyed this essay.  And this was all the reasons my dog is special.
